How to Pack Fragile Items when Moving

March 2nd, 2010

Moving day is around the corner and its time to pack up the house.
We often over look the fragile items which need to be packed for a safe arrival at the new home.
For glass and fragile items get your moving box, use packing tape to seal the bottom and make sure to have plenty of packing paper on hand.
Take the glass and wrap it in a sheet of packing paper (Packing paper should be inkless) and lay the wrapped glass in the box. Continue this and soon you realize the box is safe because each glass is protected within itself with the inkless packing paper, fill the box accordingly and use some packing paper to fill in the dead space inside of the box, tape up the box, write “fragile” on it and “this side up” and your done!
Remember to mark which room it will end up in at your new home.
You can do the same with dishes, figurines, fragile items on top of your dressers and your items located in the curio cabinets.
Tell the moving crew to place these fragile moving boxes on top when packing the moving truck, this eliminates heavy boxes sitting on top.

Hiring a Moving Company from Free Publications such as Craigslist

January 17th, 2010

Moving CompanyIts time to move and you’re faced with a lot of decisions, when doing research for Moving Companies some people try to save money by looking at the moving labor section on Craigslist. While this seems like a good idea some companies who advertise there aren’t real, they are x-moving employees/laborers who decided to go out and start their own moving business who could possibly have a criminal background.

Some states require Moving Companies to register with the Public Utilities Commission.

Usually what is required is a minimum of $20,000 Cargo Insurance along with a minimum of $300,000 Limited Liability Insurance. The Public Utilities Commission will verify and issue a Public Utilities Commission number to the moving company which is to be published on ALL advertising including the moving truck, stationary and all public postings such as CraigsList, the only advertising which is not required is on the actual moving t-shirts etc. Check the applicable laws and regulations in your State for moving company requirements and any additional information to find a legal moving company.

Generally movers insurance only pays .60 cents per pound. It’s a good idea to call your homeowners insurance provider and add extra insurance just to be on the safe side. This isn’t as expensive as you might think.

Good Luck with Your Move.

Buy New or Find Used Moving Boxes?

January 15th, 2010

Often many thoughts occur when considering whether to buy new movingused boxes boxes or used. From experience in the moving industry I have seen many different types of boxes from everywhere you can imagine.

Lets consider the most important issue, Cost… You can find used boxes from the grocery store, dumpsters and from people who recently moved, this is the cheapest way to get moving boxes but then you don’t know what has been inside of the boxes, the dumpster boxes could be soiled and have weak seems which would not allow many boxes packed on top of each other not to mention bugs! So the decision is up to you.

The next step is very important. While loading the moving truck if you use new boxes which are the same size you can create a wall which saves a lot of room in the truck to enable you to load the furniture and not run out of room. New Moving Boxes are always best and remember to buy plenty of tape and packing paper to protect your valuable glassware.
